Mumbai
is a coastal city of India which lies at the mouth of the Ulhas River .
Lying on the western (Konkan) coast, it is originally constituted of seven islands of Arabian Sea. These are
Bombay Island, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island. There are numerous creeks and
bays on the coastline of the city. The eastern coast of has large mangrove
swamps,
but the western coast is mostly sandy and rocky. Northern Mumbai is hilly. The
reclamation of land from the sea that was started in mid 18th
century continued till 1960s. During the process city and its suburbs has been
greatly expanded. Nariman Point and Cuffe Parade are
the last to be reclaimed and developed.
Situated
at latitude - 18º 53' north and longitude - 72º 50' east, the city has total
area of 603.4 km2. The city has two parts, Mumbai City district (also known as Island City or South Mumbai)
and Mumbai Suburban district. Mumbai is
located at 0 Altitude with many areas lying just above sea level, only at
elevation of 10-15m. Mumbai comes under Seismic Zone III which means it has
risk of mild to medium intensity earthquakes.

has tropical wet and dry climate. Since it is
situated on the coast, most of the year climate is humid. Summers extend from
